AFTER DARK

Bioluminescent Plankton in Krabi: What the Night Swim Is Really Like

The final swim is quiet, dark and difficult to photograph. Move your hands through the water and tiny flashes can appear around you—a natural phenomenon rather than a staged light show.

01

What makes the water glow

Some microscopic marine organisms emit light when the water around them is disturbed. In darkness, that reaction can look like small blue-white sparks following a swimmer’s movement.

The effect is easier to see with your eyes adjusted to the dark. Phone cameras often struggle, which is why the memory can be far stronger than the photograph.

02

Is it guaranteed?

Plankton exists naturally and its visibility changes. Moonlight, water movement, weather and concentration all affect what guests see on a particular night.

Bamboo visits the strongest safe location available near the end of the cruise, but we do not promise a specific brightness or manufacture the effect.

03

How the swim works

The crew explains the entry, current and return route before anyone enters. Flotation equipment is available, and guests who are not confident swimmers should ask for direct assistance.

Keep movement gentle, remain within the marked area and follow crew instructions. The water is warm, but bringing a dry layer for the return to Ao Nang is a good idea.

04

The best way to experience it

Allow your eyes to adjust, leave the phone on the boat for a moment and move slowly. The phenomenon is subtle, natural and most memorable when the group gives the darkness space.

The swim follows dinner at sunset and usually happens around 7:00 PM, before the boat returns to Ao Nang at approximately 8:00 PM.
